Investing in Trafford's Community Hospitals

We are pleased to inform you of the start of a project to plan the modernisation of services available at Altrincham General and Stretford Memorial Hospitals.

At the December meeting of the Altrincham Area Board, you expressed an interest in being kept informed of developments, and we hope you will find the information in this letter of interest.

This new project is about making improvements in the range and quality of services at Altrincham General and Stretford Memorial Hospitals. The NHS in Trafford believes this can be achieved by:

Using national guidance that specifies providing care in, or as close to, home as possible

Complementing the services available at acute hospitals used by Trafford people

Improving local access to diagnostic and treatment services

Exploiting opportunities for NHS, social services and voluntary organisations to provide services from the same place

Exploring options to make these local hospitals a more effective community resource

The first stage of the project will involve seeking the views of staff, patients, local people and other stakeholders to explore and develop options for change. These views will then inform the development of proposals for formal public consultation early in 2005.

The NHS in Trafford has commissioned Price Waterhouse Coopers to undertake this detailed work. They will be responsible for leading the pre consultation process and consolidating your and other partners views in a paper detailing the options for future service delivery within Altrincham General and Stretford Memorial hospitals.

We will be reporting progress through the local media and have set up a section on our website available at www.trafford.nhs.uk

If you would be interested in receiving more information about the project or be involved in the discussions for change, then please return the reply slip attached. We look forward to working with you in the months to come.

Yours sincerely
